RISING
For the inaugural RISING festival in 2020 (formerly Melbourne International Arts Festival) Grace Herbert (Artistic Associate) curated the Chinatown district visual arts projects including the Golden Square exhibition and Jenny Holzer’s I CONJURE on the facade of the Queen Victoria Women’s Centre. Outside of Chinatown Grace curated Jeremy Deller’s Father & Son and Patricia Piccinini’s major solo exhibition A Miracle Constantly Repeated in the abandoned Flinders Street Station.
In its first year, Golden Square used the theme Inland Tides to examine migration, colonisation, technology, consumerism and an environment in flux. Celestial bodies move aquatic swells, fresh water meets salt, minerals are deposited, and information exchanged. The exhibition included work from Reko Rennie, Lu Yang, Tabita Rezaire, Patty Chang, Cao Fei, Lucy Bleach, Atong Atem,
